We received a comment on one of our previous Toxin Talk posts asking for more information regarding essential oils and with their growing popularity recently we felt it would be very informative to shed some light on those that may be toxic to your sweet fur babies. There are so many different kinds of essential oils available - we could definitely go on and on about each of them! The info-graphic above includes the most common ones that may be toxic to your pets. That being said, please note that toxic essential oils are not only limited to the ones included here.

Though essential oils are used as treatments for common ailments for people, it is important to keep in mind that animals react to and adsorb the oils differently than humans do. Cats and dogs have an enhanced sense of smell, so using diffusers can be overwhelming for them. Their livers also cannot metabolize some of the compounds present in essential oils, which can make them more susceptible to toxicity. Adverse reactions vary, though they may include squinting, excessive drooling, scratching, increased breathing rate, and lethargy. Thus, if you do have essential oils around, be sure to keep them away from your pets reach. Please understand that as with any form of toxin ingestion, time is of the essence.
