New Year’s Pet Safety Tips
By Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital
As we ring in the new year, it’s important to keep your furry friends safe and stress-free. New Year’s celebrations often involve loud noises, unfamiliar guests, and festive foods—all of which can pose risks to pets. At Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital, we’re here to help you start the year off right with these easy pet safety tips.
1. Keep Pets Calm During Fireworks
Fireworks and loud noises can cause anxiety and fear in both dogs and cats. Keep your pet indoors, close the curtains, and play calming music to mask outside noise. If your pet has noise phobia, speak with us about calming options.
2. Create a Safe, Quiet Space
Parties and guests can be overwhelming. Give your pet a quiet room with their bed, toys, and fresh water where they can relax away from the noise and activity.
3. Watch the Door
If you’re hosting guests, be mindful of open doors—pets can easily slip out during arrivals or departures. Make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing ID tags just in case.
4. Avoid Unsafe Foods and Drinks
Alcohol, chocolate, grapes, and rich or fatty foods are common at New Year’s gatherings—and all are toxic to pets. Remind guests not to feed your pet table scraps, and keep trash secure.
5. Be Mindful of Decorations
Confetti, balloons, and party poppers can look like toys to pets but are dangerous if chewed or swallowed. Clean up party supplies promptly to prevent accidents.
