Common Human Medications That Are Toxic to Pets

By Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital

It’s easy to assume that what’s safe for us is safe for our pets—but many common over-the-counter (OTC) medications can be extremely dangerous to dogs and cats. At Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital, we often see accidental poisonings from human meds that could have been avoided with a little awareness.

Here are some of the most common—and harmful—medications to keep away from your furry family members.

1. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)

Ibuprofen is highly toxic to both dogs and cats. Even a small dose can cause vomiting, stomach ulcers, kidney failure, or worse. Never give it to your pet for pain relief.

2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

Just one regular-strength tablet can be lethal to a cat. In dogs, acetaminophen can damage the liver and red blood cells. It’s never safe unless specifically prescribed by a veterinarian.

3. Aspirin

Aspirin can cause serious gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney damage in pets, especially if given in improper doses. It should only be used under direct veterinary guidance.

4. Antihistamines (e.g., Benadryl, Claritin)

Some antihistamines may be safe in specific doses for certain pets, but others contain dangerous ingredients like decongestants (pseudoephedrine), which are toxic. Always check with your vet first.

5. Decongestants (e.g., Sudafed)

Many cold and sinus medications contain pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine, both of which are highly toxic to pets and can cause high blood pressure, tremors, seizures, and even death.

6. Sleep Aids & Anti-Anxiety Medications

OTC sleep medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl PM) or melatonin can be harmful in the wrong dose. Prescription anti-anxiety meds like Xanax or Ativan are extremely dangerous for pets.
