Holiday Safety Tips for Your Pets

By Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital

The holidays are a time for celebration, but they can also bring unexpected hazards for our pets. At Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital, we want to help you keep your furry companions safe, happy, and healthy during the festive season. Here are some simple holiday safety tips every pet owner should know.

1. Keep Decorations Out of Reach

Tinsel, ribbons, ornaments, and string lights can be tempting for curious pets but are dangerous if chewed or swallowed. Place decorations out of reach and avoid using small or breakable items within paw’s reach.

2. Watch Out for Toxic Foods

Many holiday treats are dangerous for pets, including:

  • Chocolate
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Onions and garlic
  • Alcohol
  • Xylitol (a sugar substitute found in gum and baked goods)

Stick to pet-safe treats and keep human food out of reach—especially during parties or family meals.

3. Be Cautious with Holiday Plants

Poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and lilies are all toxic to pets. Opt for pet-safe greenery or use artificial plants instead.

4. Provide a Safe Space

Holiday gatherings can be overwhelming. Give your pet a quiet, comfortable space to relax away from noise, guests, and activity. Don’t forget to check on them often.

5. Secure Cords and Candles

Keep electrical cords, batteries, and candles well out of reach. Pets may chew on cords or knock over candles, which can cause burns or fires.
