Cold Weather Safety Tips for Your Pets
By Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital
As temperatures drop, it’s important to keep your pets safe and comfortable during the cold months. At Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital, we want to share simple cold weather safety tips to help your furry friends stay healthy and happy all winter long.
Watch for Signs of Cold Stress
Pets can suffer from cold-related problems like frostbite and hypothermia. Watch for shivering, whining, lethargy, or lifting paws off the ground. If you notice any of these signs, bring your pet inside to warm up.
Limit Time Outdoors
Shorten outdoor playtime during extreme cold, especially for small, elderly, or short-haired pets. Bring them inside regularly to warm up and dry off if they get wet.
Dress for the Weather
Consider using pet sweaters or coats for dogs with thin fur or those that feel the cold more. Booties can protect paws from ice, salt, and cold surfaces.
Protect Their Paws
Salt and ice-melting chemicals can irritate your pet’s paws. Wipe paws after walks and check for cracks or redness. Using paw balm can help protect and soothe.
Provide Warm Shelter
If your pet stays outside, ensure they have a warm, dry shelter protected from wind and moisture. Ideally, pets should stay indoors during cold weather.
Watch Their Diet and Hydration
Pets may need extra calories in cold weather to maintain body heat. Make sure fresh water is always available and not frozen.
