What Is an RVT?

An RVT is a licensed veterinary healthcare professional who assists veterinarians by performing clinical tasks such as administering medications, running lab tests, assisting in surgeries, and educating pet owners.

Steps to Becoming an RVT in Ontario

1. Graduate from a Veterinary Technology Program Recognized by the OAVT:
   You must complete a veterinary technology diploma or degree program recognized by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT). Examples of recognized programs in Ontario include Sheridan College and Seneca College.
2. Pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE):
   After graduation, you’ll need to pass the VTNE, a national exam that tests your veterinary knowledge and skills.
3. Register with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT):
   To legally work as an RVT in Ontario, you must be registered with the OAVT. Registration requires proof of your education from an OAVT-recognized program and your VTNE exam results.
4. Commit to Continuing Education:
   Registered RVTs in Ontario are required to participate in ongoing professional development to maintain their certification and stay current in veterinary medicine.
