Von Willebrand’s Disease in Pets: What You Need to Know
By Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital
Von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD) may not be a household name, but for some pets—especially certain dog breeds—it can be a serious health concern. At Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital, we believe that early awareness is key to keeping your furry family members safe.
What Is von Willebrand’s Disease?
Von Willebrand’s Disease is an inherited bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency in a protein (called von Willebrand factor) that helps blood clot properly. Without enough of this protein, affected pets may bleed more than normal, even from small injuries.
Common Signs to Watch For:
Some pets show no symptoms until they experience trauma or undergo surgery.
Breeds at Higher Risk:
While any dog can have vWD, it’s more common in breeds like:
Cats can also develop vWD, but it’s much rarer.
How Is It Diagnosed?
A simple blood test can diagnose von Willebrand’s Disease. If your pet is a higher-risk breed or scheduled for surgery, your vet may recommend screening to avoid complications.
Can It Be Treated?
While there’s no cure, vWD can often be managed with care. This includes avoiding certain medications (like NSAIDs), managing injury risks, and using special products to control bleeding when needed.
