National Immunization Awareness Month: Protecting Your Pet’s Health
From the team at Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, the perfect time to remind pet owners about the importance of keeping their pets up-to-date on vaccinations. At Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital, we’re committed to your pet’s health, and immunizations play a vital role in preventing serious diseases.

🐾 Why Vaccines Matter for Your Pet

Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to protect your pet from dangerous diseases, many of which are contagious and can be life-threatening. Whether your pet is a puppy, kitten, or adult, vaccines help strengthen their immune system, keeping them safe and healthy.

💉 Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines

  • For Cats:

    • Core vaccines: FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) and rabies.
    • Non-core vaccines: FeLV (feline leukemia) is recommended for cats that go outdoors or are exposed to other cats.
  • For Dogs:

    • Core vaccines: DA2PP+Lepto (distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and leptospirosis) and rabies.
    • Non-core vaccines: Bordetella (for kennel cough) and Lyme disease (for dogs that are in tick-prone areas).

🐶 When Should Your Pet Be Vaccinated?

  • Puppies and kittens should start their vaccination series at 6-8 weeks of age, with follow-up doses until 16 weeks.
  • Adult pets require booster shots, typically every 1-3 years, depending on the vaccine.
  • Senior pets may have adjusted vaccination schedules. It’s important to talk to your vet about your pet’s specific needs.

🐱 The Bigger Picture

Vaccinating your pet isn’t just about their health—it’s also about community health. Many of the diseases that vaccines protect against are zoonotic, meaning they can spread between pets and humans. By vaccinating your pet, you’re helping prevent the spread of these diseases in your community.
