Hiking with Your Pet: Tips for a Safe and Fun Adventure
From the team at Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital
Summer is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors—and what better way to enjoy it than with your furry companion by your side? Hiking with your pet can be an amazing bonding experience, but it requires a little extra preparation to ensure both you and your pet have a safe and enjoyable adventure. Here are some tips from Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital to make your next hike a success.
🐾 1. Get Your Pet Ready
Before hitting the trails, make sure your pet is physically fit for the hike. Start with shorter, easier trails to build their stamina. Also, make sure they’re up-to-date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, as these pests are common in hiking areas.
💧 2. Stay Hydrated
Pets can get overheated quickly, especially during long hikes or hot weather. Bring plenty of water for both you and your pet, and a collapsible bowl for easy access. Take regular breaks in the shade to keep your pet cool and prevent dehydration.
🦶 3. Protect Those Paws
Rough, rocky terrain can be hard on your pet’s paws. Check their paws regularly for any cuts or blisters, and consider investing in booties for extra protection, especially if you're hiking in areas with rough or hot surfaces.
🐕 4. Keep Your Pet on a Leash
Even if your dog is well-trained, it’s safest to keep them on a leash during the hike. Not only does this protect them from wildlife or getting lost, but it also ensures they don’t accidentally injure themselves on the trail.
🚶♀️ 5. Pack Smart
Be sure to bring essentials like waste bags, a first aid kit, pet-friendly sunscreen (especially for light-colored pets), and your pet’s ID. A small snack for your pet is also a good idea, especially on longer hikes.
🌲 6. Know the Trail and Terrain
Research the trail in advance to understand its difficulty level, length, and potential hazards. Some trails may be too steep or difficult for certain pets, and it’s important to know what you’re getting into before heading out.
