July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month: Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe
From the team at Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital

Did you know July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month? It’s the perfect time to take extra steps to keep your furry friends safe—especially with Canada Day fireworks. Fireworks can be overwhelming for pets, often causing them to panic and run off. At Lakeshore Road Animal Hospital, we want to help you prepare for the festivities and reduce the risk of your pet getting lost.

🎆 Fireworks & Pets: A Dangerous Combo

Every year, many pets go missing after being frightened by fireworks. The loud sounds and bright lights can trigger anxiety in dogs and cats, leading them to run away from home. To prevent this, keep your pets inside during firework displays, and make sure all doors, windows, and gates are securely closed.

🐾 Tips to Prevent Your Pet from Getting Lost

  1. Update Identification
Ensure your pet's collar has a current ID tag with your contact info. Microchipping is another great way to ensure your pet can be traced back to you if they get lost.
  2. Secure Your Home
Before the fireworks start, double-check that all escape routes—doors, gates, and windows—are tightly secured. Some pets may try to bolt through an open door or fence.
  3. Create a Safe Space
If your pet gets scared easily, set up a quiet, comfortable area for them away from the noise. Provide their favorite toys, a cozy blanket, and some calming music to drown out the fireworks.
  4. Consider Anxiety Relief
For particularly anxious pets, talk to us about anxiety-reducing products, like calming collars or pheromone sprays, that can help them feel more at ease.

🐕 What to Do if Your Pet Goes Missing

  • Don’t Panic: Stay calm and start looking immediately. Check your yard and surrounding areas.
  • Notify Local Shelters & Vets: Call nearby animal shelters and clinics (like us!) to report your pet as missing. We can help spread the word.
  • Use Social Media: Post clear photos of your pet and your contact information on social media platforms and lost pet websites.
