Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet

Have you ever seen a stray cat or dog walking the streets in your neighbourhood? Have you ever done anything about it?

More likely then not you would see a cat wandering the streets and searching for a new friend or perhaps its next meal then you would find a dog; though previous studies done by CFHS (Canadian Federation of Humane Societies) they have found that 45% of dogs brought to Canadian shelters were stray and an outstanding 53 % were stray cats. It is always difficult to tell if the animal is an outdoor pet or a stray if they are not marked properly, this article will outline the importance of having your animal Microchipped to prevent this confusion in the future.

The idea of microchipping may seem inhumane to some people, but in fact the process of microchipping is incredibly quick and easy. The insertion of the chip into your pet simply feels similar to taking blood, it does not require sedation or an over night stay. Once the chip is administered to your pet, the organization such as your veterinarian or local adoption agency should be able to register it immediately. Unlike a collar or an ID tag this chip is now inside your animal so there is no way for it to slide off or get lost, it should last all the long loving years your pet does.

In 2014 Canadian shelters took in over 38,00 dogs and 85,00 cats. Of this number, only 30% of dogs were returned to their guardians and 5% of cats. By microchipping we can ensure that these percentages will go up, as the microchip can send lost pet alerts to animal shelters, animal hospitals and veterinarians in your area. There is also a 24/7 medical hotline for any questions or concerns regarding your pet.

To keep animals out of our shelters and animal loss we highly recommend microchipping as it will ensure that your pet will always return home safely.
